Science Experiment Set Up
- Container of water (clear is preferable)
- Glass (clear is preferable)
- paper (we used tissue paper and paper towels)
Ask your child what they think will happen when the paper towel goes into the water, and have them put the towel into the water. Then ask what they think will happen if the paper towel is in the glass, and let them try it. Then, what if the glass is upside down?
To do the science trick, have your child scrunch up a piece of paper into the bottom of a dry glass. Make sure that enough paper is scrunched so that it won’t fall out when you flip the glass upside down. Also make sure that it’s scrunched enough that there aren’t any pieces hanging down beyond the glass that would get into the water during the scene experiment.
Then flip the glass upside down, and holding it very straight and steady, put the glass inside the container of water, straight down to the bottom. Then pull the glass out, also straight and steady. The paper stayed dry!
When you can connect your science project to something else going on in your child’s life – even better! We did this experiment using a water glass, and made the connection to the glass of water requested in Llama Llama Red Pajama, this month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids book.
Llama Llama Red Pajama is a story about a little llama who calls down to his mama for a glass of water after being put in bed. And then he starts to imagine where she might be when she doesn’t come right away. But all is right in the end, and, as the llama mama reminds her baby, “Baby llama don’t cause such a tizzy, sometimes mama llama’s busy!”
