Do you have basic boring plastic plant pots kicking around house? You know the ones I am referring to. They are either black, brown or a poor imitation terracotta colour. They were inexpensive to buy and they look like they were inexpensive to buy.
I bought a couple of plastic fake looking terracotta plant pots for an idea I had in mind but the idea I had in mind did not work out. That happens to me occasionally. So I shoved them at the back of my potting bench in the garage and forgot about them.
Then I was recently inspired by a DIY project from The DIY Mommy If you are not familiar with this blog or Christina who is the talented creator behind the blog I highly recommend you pop over for a visit and an opportunity to be inspired. She recently shared a great idea for how to Make Lace Decoupaged Garden Containers Using Mod Podge and vintage lace trim. The final result was gorgeous. I now had an idea for how to make my boring fake looking plastic terracotta looking plant pots look a whole lot better.
This how to make beautiful DIY painted lace decoupage plant pots was also a project waiting to happen. I had all of the materials in the house leftover from previous projects I have shared on the blog.
I have a favourite paint colour made by Fusion Mineral Paint. It is called Liberty Blue. It is a rich, intense very blue colour. I used in my Thrift Store Patio Table Tray Makeover that you see in the image below. I even used it on my DIY Decorated Rain Barrel Using Fun Vibrant Colours. I am very impressed with how it was to work with and how it looks on my DIY projects.
I also had some cotton white lace leftover from How To Make A Runner For A Bedroom Dresser made for the furniture in the master bedroom.
Are you familiar with how to decoupage using Mod Podge? I had some leftover Mod Podge from the project Handy DIY Two Month Receipt Organizer.
Basically I just went shopping around the house to create this DIY project. Not only was it quite inexpensive but it is also very easy to do! Here is how to…
Make Beautiful Painted Lace Decoupage Plant Pots
Materials
- plastic plant pot
- spray paint primer
- Liberty Blue Fusion Mineral Paint
- lace trim
- paint brush
- glossy Mod Podge
- foam brush
Instructions
Step 1
Wash and thoroughly clean the outside of the plastic plant pot.
Step 2
Apply 2 – 3 coats of spray paint primer. Make the first coat a light dusting and allow to dry thoroughly. Make the second coat a bit thicker and allow to dry thoroughly. If necessary apply a third coat to provide good coverage. It is better to apply several light coats rather than a heavy coat to avoid dripping product on your project.
Step 3
Apply 2 coats of Liberty Blue Fusion Mineral Paint with a paint brush. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly. I let the paint dry for 24 hours before the next step.
The inside of the plant pot does not need to be completely painted. Just paint around the inside rim or to a point where the soil will cover the rest of the plant pot.
Step 4
Coat the area with Mod Podge where the lace trim will be applied with the foam brush. The Mod Podge is acting as a glue during this step.
Carefully secure the lace on top of the Mod Podge. Cut the end of the lace to match up where both ends look the same.
Now apply a good coating of Mod Podge on top of the lace and all of the outside of the painted plant pot with the foam brush. The Mod Podge is now acting as a sealant. It will also give the entire plant pot a glossy look. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Final Comments: I have to admit I love how they turned out! The blue accented with the white lace will go really well with any flower colour. For the fall season I planted some pink/purple outdoor fall mums to make a stunning colour combination. These beautiful painted lace decoupage plant pots are a gorgeous décor accent for both indoors and outdoors in a covered location. I am enjoying mine on our covered patio.
Your Turn: Do you have some plastic plant pots that could use an update? What flowers would you plant in them?
Love it? Pin it! Thanks for sharing it!
Have an inspired day!
