DIY Rose Water

I’ve written extensively here on the blog about my love for rose water. It’s nourishing, hydrating, and gentle on skin, which makes it a great natural skin care option for nearly every skin type. It can be used in many different DIY skin care “recipes”, like an anti-acne spray and a post-workout toner.

DIY Rose Water

For the most part, I buy Spark Naturals rose water, because it’s affordable and I love the quality, but I thought it would be fun to explore the possibility of making my own (plus, I’ve had several of you request it!)

The process is surprisingly easy, and I think it would make a great DIY gift for friends and family. So let’s get started, shall we?

Make Your Own Rose Water

Start by removing the petals from about 3 roses, and place them in a small pot. Add distilled water into the pot, just enough so that the petals are barely covered.

Place the pot on the stove and bring it to a simmer. Cover the pot with a lid, and allow the petals to simmer until the rose petals have lost most of their color.

Once most of the petals have become transparent, strain the petals out of the water into a bowl or jar, and allow the rose water to cool.

DIY Rose Water

While homemade rose water probably won’t have all of the potent properties of rose water that’s made using pure rose essential oil, there are still plenty of beneficial ways to use it!

  • Add some to your next bath for a relaxing and skin-nourishing soak.
  • To use it as a skin toner, add a tablespoon of rose water to 1 cup of distilled water.
  • Put some in a small sprayer bottle to use as a light fragrance.
  • Pour half a cup or so into a bowl of hot water to use as a foot soak for dry or tired feet.

What is your favorite use for rose water?
