The night sky lights up over the east coast of Sicily as Mount Etna’s Voragine crater erupts for the first time in two years. The giant plume of smoke and ash thrown up by the blast creates a dazzling display of volcanic lightning, a mysterious phenomenon seen in many of the most powerful volcanic eruptions. Tiananmen Square is photographed on a day of heavy pollution in Beijing. China’s capital and many cities in the northern part of the country recorded the worst smog of the year with air quality devices in some areas unable to read such high levels of pollutants. Levels of PM 2.5, considered the most hazardous, crossed 600 units in Beijing, nearly 25 times the acceptable standard set by the World Health Organisation. The governments of more than 190 countries met in Paris last week for the UN climate change conference to set targets on reducing carbon emissions. Photograph: Kevin Frayer/Getty Images

The Perito Moreno glacier stands in Los Glaciares national park, part of the southern Patagonian ice field, in Argentina. The majority of the almost 50 large glaciers in Los Glaciares have been retreating for the past 50 years due to warming temperatures, according to the European Space Agency. The United States Geological Survey reports that over 68% of the world’s freshwater supplies are locked in ice caps and glaciers. Photograph: Mario Tama/Getty Images

Under heavy UN and Vatican protection, Francis travelled in his open popemobile into the heart of PK5, where 15,000 Muslims are surrounded by Christian militias. Before the civil war erupted in March 2013, the Muslim population of the capital was about 122,000 but most have fled. Thousands gathered at the roadside, cheering as the papal entourage drove down red dirt roads. Photograph: Gianluigi Guercia/AFP/Getty Images

Rome’s Cinecittà, a film set the size of Vatican City, is where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fell in love on the set of Cleopatra, the movie that almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox. Federico Fellini, who filmed La Dolce Vita there, called it the ‘temple of dreams’. Photograph: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images

The president said he was still bemused by the Turkish decision to shoot down the SU-24, and received applause for saying: ‘Perhaps only Allah knows why they did this.’ The pilot was awarded the hero of Russia award posthumously.
