STEAM Kids is a beautifully designed, easy to follow book full of activities that are each broken down into easy doable steps to follow with a colour coded system to see which STEAM area is being covered with each project.
STEAM Kids brings fun to learning. Written by a mix of award winning educators, a MIT engineer, graphic designers and homeschooling experts, STEAM Kids is written mostly for children aged 4 to 10 but can easily be adapted to younger or older children.
We took the Pendulum Painting activity from the book and adapted it, making it bigger by taking it outside and more sustainable by using water as our paint.
Originally we were going to use sand to 'paint' but found that it didn't move quickly enough through the hole in our container to leave a steady pattern as it swung so we brainstormed what else we could use then decided on water. We suspended our pendulum from our carport roof which is quite large so we could easily move to another part of the carport when we needed a fresh canvas. The kids were thoroughly engaged and excited to see the patterns appear. They loved experimented to see how they could create different patterns depending on how they swung the pendulum.
The instructions to make a pendulum can be found in the STEAM Kids book. We used made ours in winter but it would be the perfect activity for summer!
