LEGO Water Activity Building Dams STEM Idea

Try a fun LEGO water activity! Can you use your LEGO bricks on an inclined surface to control the flow of water? Building water dams is a terrific hands on STEM activity for kids using a favorite building material, LEGO! Plus LEGO bricks are perfect for getting wet! Check out how we set up our inclined surface below. You may need to adjust your design depending on the variety of bricks and pieces you have available.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

LEGO base Plate

LEGO 2×2 and 2×4 Bricks

LEGO Slopes {assorted sizes}

LEGO Hinged Pieces {2}

Tray or Shallow Bin {to catch water}

Bottle of Water {to test your design}

LEGO WATER ACTIVITY AND DAM BUILDING STEM PROJECT

Once you have your inclined plane set up and on a tray or in a bin to catch overflow, it’s time to design your dam! This a great activity that multiple ages can work on together as well as different abilities. You can make your LEGO water dams as complex or simple as you like and tweak your design for desired results over and over again. You can also encourage older kids to sketch a design first, write predictions, record observations, and analyze the results to draw a conclusion about the effectiveness of their design.

I am pretty sure the most fun part of this building water dams LEGO STEM activity is pouring the water! This would make an excellent outdoor STEM activity as well.
