“I want the lipstick to feel quite young, you know—not too lady,” said Val Garland, gesturing toward the fresh red coat on Gigi Hadid backstage at Giambattista Valli. To render that childlike effect, meant to capture the self-reflective spirit of Simone de Beauvoir’s memoirs, the makeup artist meticulously drew MAC Retro Matte paint onto a handful of models, then blurred the edges slightly with a fluffy brush—unintentionally crafting the look of a just-kissed mouth.

It’s an irreverent yet poetic makeup statement that has popped up again and again this season. At Molly Goddard’s whimsical raver-themed show in London, knotted bubble ponytails and ruched gingham skirts paired well with soft, smudged lip lines, conjuring the image of a manic pixie out on the town. The more dramatically diffused crimson edges at Mother of Pearl lent a frenetic tinge that, coupled with rumpled bouffant hair, evoked wild romance and freewheeling fun. Think of it as a charming new way to wear lipstick—encouraging offbeat beauty by drawing outside the lines.
