The Lagoon Nebula - M8

4000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius there is a region of space known as the Lagoon Nebula. This giant cloud of gas and dust is creating intensely bright young stars, and is home to many young star clusters. The nebula also contains Bok globules, which are the dark, collapsing clouds of protostellar material seen thought out this image.
