Grow A CD Gardent

After doing the Hovercraft and Friction experiment, we were left with an empty CD case. Some creative upcycling idea was needed!

We got rid of our grass lawn a few years ago because the location wasn’t suitable for growing healthy grass. But we still have a bag of grass seed left and some fresh soil left. So why not turn the CD case into a grass garden?

We didn’t know if it would work, but tried it anyway. It took a while to see the result, but we did it!

Steps

1. Open up the CD case and remove the inner section that holds a CD.

1. Put a thin layer of potting soil at the bottom of the case (the edge that is not the hinge).

1. Sprinkle plenty of grass seeds over the soil.

1. Add another thin layer of soil on top of the seeds.
2. Close the CD case. Use packaging tape to securely tape over the bottom so that curious fingers cannot disturb the soil.
3. Water the soil from the slit on the top edge of the case everyday.
4. Keep the soil moist at all time and do not let it dry out. But also don’t drown it with too much water.

1. Let it get at least 6 hours of sunlight during the day.
2. Check the progress everyday and watch the grass grow!

Why

Like most plants, grass needs water, soil, air and sunlight to grow.

In order to absorb water and nutrients in the soil, grass roots grow down into the earth. If you carefully examine the soil everyday, you will see that the radicle (primary root) is the first thing to emerge from the embryo during germination. Next is the narrow leaf.

• types of soil,
• amount of sunlight,
• amount of water,
• compacting or loosening the soil
