SEM of hair follicle (center)
This is a healthy hair follicle that has just shed its hair. During the resting phase of a follicle (telogen), the hair does not grow, and when it falls out, it has what we know as the “root” attached. Pulling a hair out at this stage does not harm the follicle to any significant degree, and a new hair should begin growing within less than 100 days, when the processes of the hair cycle naturally start over.
You can see that the follicle is surrounded by the squamous epithelial cells that are found on the surface of the skin and scalp.
