I created this simple worksheet for some science fun with my Three.
Here are the objects we collected to see if they were magnetic:
- plastic ruler
- key
- clothespin (with metal clip)
- book
- coin
- scissors
- pencil
- nail
- spoon
- paper clip
For each object, my Three guessed whether it was magnetic. Then we tested it with the big blue magnet from our awesome magnet kit (we love the kit, but you can get just the big blue magnet too).
When we began the activity, I asked my Four if he wanted to do it with us. He refused – repeatedly.
After he saw what we were doing, though, he requested a worksheet so he could do it when we were done!
Surprises:
- The pencil was magnetic! The magnet picked up the metal ring near the eraser.
- If we held the magnet close to a small magnetic object, it hopped up to the magnet. This happened with both the nail and the paper clip.
- My Three was surprised when the spoon, key, and coin were not magnetic.
After we filled out the recording sheet, my Three had a lot of fun playing with the magnetic marbles and counters that are part of our magnet kit. I showed him how we could use the magnetic wand to move the magnetic marbles around without even touching them!
I’d have loved to get more pictures for you, but I had a certain little one (15 months) on my lap, and she was intent on grabbing my camera. So forgive me for the fuzzy pictures and go ahead and download your freebie.
