Curtains offer both aesthetic appeal and functionality to your outdoor space. "They create intimacy and coziness by creating the atmosphere of being indoors, since curtains are traditionally for interior spaces," says McDonald. Beyond lending a charming aesthetic to your outdoor space, curtains allow for shade on sunny days, shelter on windy days, and privacy during dinner parties or other social gatherings.
Bid farewell to unwelcoming metal sofas with loose cushions. If you have a covered outdoor space, opt for upholstered couches and chairs. "There's nothing more comfortable than a squishy, upholstered piece of furniture with fabric all over it," says McDonald. "Choose something you might also have in your library or bedroom." Cover your furniture when dew or rain is expected, and bring indoors during the colder months if you live in a seasonal climate.
Bring your indoor candles and candlesticks out. "Littering your yard with candles and lanterns adds romance to the space," says McDonald. "It creates an indoor atmosphere, where you feel like you're in a living room." Invest in glass cylinders or hurricane glass shades to place around candles to protect their flames from wind.
Just as you meticulously choose textiles for your indoor pillows and chairs, be selective about what you place outside. "You can recreate the warmth and comfort that you usually only have indoors with textiles," says McDonald. In this Beverly Hills estate, McDonald dotted the couch with indoor pillows covered with Ralph Lauren and Chinese fabrics. The blue and white color scheme was inspired by Chinese porcelain, and the striped seat fabric was selected for fresh, summery appeal.
