(Photo: sivanadar/Shutterstock)

There's nothing more relaxing than soaking in a mineral-rich hot spring, but if you happen to visit Tanzania's Lake Natron, you're better off leaving the soaking to the lesser flamingos that famously inhabit the area. Take a look at these unlucky animals that ventured into Natron's salty waters.

With animals literally being turned into calcified statues, you might wonder why flamingos like to hang out on the lake when there are plenty of freshwater sources throughout Africa they could choose from instead. There are actually several reasons, but first and foremost, it comes down to diet.

Lesser flamingos primarily feed on a cyanobacteria known as spirulina (Arthrospira fusiformis), which grows in bodies of water with high alkalinity levels. Because Lake Natron is brimming with alkaline water, it offers the perfect environment for this bacteria to thrive. As a result, flamingos flock there every year by the millions to feed and breed.

In addition to serving as the main food source of lesser flamingos, spirulina is also responsible for the birds' famous coloring. While the cyanobacteria itself is dark blue-green in color, spirulina contains photosynthetic pigments called carotenoids (also found in things like carrots, egg yolks and autumn leaves). You may have heard that if you eat enough carrots, your skin will turn orange. This is 100 percent true, and it applies to flamingos as well. The carotenoids in spirulina are directly responsible for the bright orange and bubblegum pink hues of flamingos.

Aerial view of Tanzania's Lake Natron. (Photo: Bildagentur Zoonar GmbH/Shutterstock)

The abundance of spirulina isn't the only reason Lake Natron (pictured above) is such an ideal habitat for these gorgeous birds. The lake is inhospitable to most flora and fauna, but the flamingos can safely wade in the shallow areas of the water. And because these birds like to breed and nest on the lake's isolated islands, the caustic water that surrounds them acts as a barrier, keeping them safe from predators like baboons and wildcats.

This natural buffer has enabled the birds to proliferate at this site in great numbers. Currently, Lake Natron serves as the primary breeding area for 2.5 million lesser flamingos — a number that accounts for about 75 percent of the species' global population.

A massive flock of lesser flamingos nesting on Lake Natron. (Photo: Kjetil Kolbjornsrud/Shutterstock)

Needless to say, the flamingos have a pretty sweet arrangement, but this remarkable balance is starting to change as the area surrounding the lake is in danger of giving way to man-made development. Threats to Lake Natron and other lesser flamingo breeding sites across Africa are causing a "moderately rapid decline" in population, which is why the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has declared the species "near threatened."

One of the most recent threats to the Natron's ecosystem was a proposal to build a nearby soda ash plant, which would have extracted sodium carbonate from water pumped in from the lake.

According to BirdLife International, harvesting soda ash from Lake Natron "would not only affect the water levels and quality, and hence the breeding flamingos and other water birds, but also nature tourism, which is an important income generator in the wider area."

Luckily for the flamingos, the plan for the soda ash plant was eventually defeated. Despite this victory, the flamingos remain in a precarious position as the forces of climate change and human encroachment loom. About 32 percent of Tanzania's land is protected (the average for developing countries is just 13 percent), but Lake Natron's only designation is that of a "Wetland of International Importance" — a title that holds no enforceable policy power.

Original article and pictures take http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/blogs/how-caustic-lake-natron-tanzania-became-flamingo-paradise site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-71644166633081369892016-11-18T17:07:00.000-08:002016-11-21T11:28:57.840-08:00 STEM Activities for Kids 25 Screen Free Ideas
STEM Activities for Kids 25 Screen Free Ideas

<a href=http://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/stem-activities-vacation-ideas-kids/">

Here are quite a few of our fun activities as well as some super cool ideas I hope to try with my son this year! Of course, if you will be using large amounts of dry ice then be sure to work in a well ventilated area to keep good oxygen flow in the room.

Dry ice is much cooler than regular ice and can give you a freezer burn if you touch it directly so wear gloves when working with it. It will sink to the bottom of your drink so either wait until fog clears to take a drink or just sip the drink from the top without letting the dry ice actually go into your mouth. Don’t eat solid dry ice. It’s way too cold for your body!

Store dry ice in an insulated cooler, not your freezer. It is colder than regular ice and will slowly melt in your freezer. As it melts, it turns from solid carbon dioxide to gaseous carbon dioxide and the air pressure in a confined area of your freezer will increase and could cause damage.

Buy your dry ice as close as possible to when you plan to use it as it is difficult for you to keep it cold enough to remain solid for more than 8 hours or so in a home environment.

More Kids Activities

This spooky Halloween party drink is sure to be a crowd pleaser! All my nail polish lovers out there know this struggle. Getting that perfect application that doesn't come out gloopy, patchy, uneven, or take hours to dry can feel near impossible. And let's not even talk about the removal process.

So, with all that said and with Halloween and the holidays coming up, it was like fate that I stumbled upon this glitter nails video on YouTube. I wasn't expecting it to change my life (as so many tutorials always promise to do), but after trying it out, I'm pretty confident this sorcery will both shock and mesmerize you. Now, if you're a nail technician, you might already know this trick. But for the at-home-manicure-challenged, you're going to want to keep reading.

The secret? If you paint on glitter nail polish like you would any other color in your collection, you're doing it wrong. At least according to nail vlogger Kelli Marissa. But the good news is, if you want it to look as good and intensely glittery as it does in the bottle, she's got an epic tip for you.

Here's the breakdown from her video.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

1. A base coat.

2. Liquid latex (optional, but recommended).

3. Your favorite glitter nail polish.

4. A cosmetic sponge.

5. A top coat.

THE STEPS:

1. Apply your base coat as normal.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

2. Line the skin around your nails with liquid latex so it won't get covered in polish.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

3. Apply the glitter nail polish of your choice onto the edge of a makeup sponge.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

4. Dab the sponge onto your nail. (FYI, this is where the real trick lies. The sponge soaks up most of the actual nail polish leaving just the glitter behind, so it goes on dense and opaque in one fell swoop.)

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

5. Peel off the liquid latex.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

6. Apply your top coat so the glitter doesn't chip off as easily.

<picture></picture>
PHOTO: YouTube: Kelli Marissa

7. My sad, scrawny eyebrows just don't grow. (Like many teenagers of the '90s, I was an overzealous tweezer.) But bold eyebrows have been the trend for a while now; so about six months ago, I followed an eyebrow tutorial and started aggressively filling in my brows. I loved the result. Then, one day, my best friend looked at me and said, "Your eyebrow pencil is really obvious."

What? I resisted the urge to slap her in the face -- as well as the one to cry -- and defended my brow work. After all, I was using a pricey pencil, and a makeup artist had approved the color.

Fast-forward a few weeks. I had a meeting with brow expert Zoey Van Jones, and I couldn't wait to see what she thought of my brow penciling technique.

"They look pretty good," she said (just being polite, I now realize). Then, she grabbed a spoolie brush, erased the pencil and powdered in my brows with a few quick strokes. My eyebrows -- my whole face, even -- were instantly transformed. They looked thicker, more symmetrical and -- best of all -- completely natural.

So if your best friend has ever informed you that your eyebrow game needs improvement, let these eyebrow tutorial be your guide. Here, how to fill in eyebrows correctly. Try it -- I guarantee you'll notice a big difference.

SEE NEXT PAGE: Eyebrow Tip No. 1: Pencil vs. Powder

Before learning how to shape eyebrows the right way, you need the appropriate tools. Van Jones recommends using two shades of brow powder, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo, $23. (More on why you need two shades later.) Benefit Brow Zings, $32, and Urban Decay Brow Box, $30, are other great options.

Van Jones prefers powder because the result is softer. But if you're married to pencil for doing your brows, she suggests looking for one that's powdery -- not waxy. She likes M.A.C. Eye Brows, $16, and Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil, $24. If your brows lack structure, you can start with the pencil and use powder on top of it, she says.

SEE NEXT PAGE: Eyebrow Tip No. 2: How to Choose the Right Color

Original article and pictures take http://www.totalbeauty.com/content/slideshows/how-to-fill-in-eyebrows-140319 site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-54126103436361881112016-11-10T19:06:00.000-08:002016-11-21T11:28:57.749-08:00Yes, there is a correct way to hang toilet paper
Yes, there is a correct way to hang toilet paper

<a href=http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/stories/yes-there-is-a-correct-way-to-hang-toilet-paper">

This is the correct way. Obviously. (Photo: Kimberly Hall/Shutterstock)

In any given household, wars between spouses, families and roommates are waged on a variety of different fronts. Who does the dishes tonight? Who will take out the trash? How could Steve have left the toilet seat up...again? And seriously, who finished the coffee but didn't refill the pot? The audacity.

Individuals have to figure out most of these issues themselves through awkward household meetings, and, likely, more than a little bit of passive aggressive behavior.

But today, we are thrilled to report that some questions do have answers. And it might be the most important household dispute you can imagine. For far too long people have been arguing about whether the toilet paper roll should go over (meaning the toilet paper feeds out over the top) or under (meaning the toilet paper would come out from underneath).

Thanks to a patent filed on June 8, 1891 by inventor Seth Wheeler — that's 124 years ago! — we now know that the "overs" were correct. I write this as a girl who used to be an "under." I know, the shame.

Fight as the "unders" might, the proof is in the diagram.

A 1891 patent about which way to hang toilet paper. (Image: Public domain)

In addition to settling that long argued upon question, the patent tells us a bit more about toilet paper, and why we should recognize Wheeler for making bathroom time a little more user friendly. According to the patent, we have him to thank for easily tearable pieces of tissue.

In a letter to the United States Patent Office, Wheeler describes how wrapping-paper (that's what he called toilet paper) used to be packaged. He wrote, "In the manufacture of wrapping-paper it is usual to cut the same into sheets, count them out into quires or half-quires, fold them, and tie them up into bundles, such as half-reams or reams."

Wheeler wrote about his improvements, "My invention consists of a roll of connected sheets of paper for toilet use, said roll having incisions at intervals extending from the side of the web toward the center, but not meeting, and terminating in an angular out, whereby the slight connection left may be separated without injury to the connected sheets."

Tearable pieces of toilet paper certainly sound a lot easier to deal with than pre-cut pieces of tissue wrapped in a bundle.

As for the original debate between the "overs" and the "unders," as a more recently converted "over," let me say to all those religiously holding on to their "under" status, having the toilet paper dispense from the top is actually more convenient. I swear. It takes a few weeks to get used to it, and then you start scoffing whenever you see it positioned the other way.

Trust Seth Wheeler. He hasn't steered us wrong so far.

Related on MNN:

Original article and pictures take http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/stories/yes-there-is-a-correct-way-to-hang-toilet-paper site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-47655724493819771282016-11-09T18:56:00.000-08:002016-11-21T11:28:57.737-08:00WOW Wonders of Water (Brownie Journey)
WOW Wonders of Water (Brownie Journey)

<a href=http://scoutshonor.wikia.com/wiki/WOW_Wonders_of_Water_(Brownie_Journey)">

Amount of freshwater available on Earth, compared to the Earth. From the U.S. Geological Survey

For this part of the Journey, jason explore what he love about water, how they use it, why it is important, and how can personally conserve water and keep it clean.

Water Map. On a large sheet of paper, outline a map of a local waterway that the boys may be familiar with. Or use a paper map of your area and highlight the local waterways and mark water-related landmarks that the girls may be familiar with. For our troop, we used a map of Maryland, highlighting the stream behind our meeting place down the local rivers to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. We marked the place where we went camping near the river and where we went sailing to show how they were all connected.

On blue cutout waterdrop papers, the girls wrote down or drew things they love to do with water. We didn't, but could have used different colors of paper for things they love to do (e.g., swimming, sailing, go to the beach, ski, sled, ice skate, make hot chocolate), things they have to do (e.g., take baths, wash hands, cook, water plants, wash dishes and clothes), and things others do with water that they benefit from (e.g., grow watermelons, keep cows for milk, make ice, used in manufacturing almost anything in your house). We taped the waterdrop papers to the map near where the activities happen (when possible) or around the outside. We talked about how things that happen upstream (trash thrown in the stream) could impact the things we like to do downstream (trash in the water near our campsite).

Another troop posted pictures of their water drops.

Fieldscope maps. National Geographic has a Chesapeake Bay FieldScope website that lets you explore the areas around the bay, adding different layers of data to the map. You can see how the water flows down the rivers, into the bay, and out to the ocean. You can add a "query point" to the map, then trace how water flows from there into the bay.

Water Cycle Experiment 1. In a clear plastic box (e.g., a clamshell box like fresh vegetables come in sometimes), put a 'mountain' of refried beans on one side, leaving room for a 'lake' on the other side. Before you start and as you go along, ask the scouts to describe what they see. Pour in ~1/2 cup of boiling water down the mountain. How does the water flow? Does it form things that look like streams/rivers that merge together? Close the clamshell. Watch the steam build up on the roof, like clouds. Next, put 2-3 ice cubes in a ziploc bag (so it doesn't leak) or use a small cooler pack, and set it on top of the clamshell over the mountain. See if the 'clouds' over the mountain start to 'rain' as the water cools.

Just found another version of this at Corkboard Connections using a rotisserie chicken plastic container.

Rain in a Bag. Rain in a Bag would work as a quick opening craft for a take-home activity. We discussed the different states of matter for water and pretended to be water molecules with arms stuck out in a V-shape. The girls pretended to be molecules as they changed from a liquid (all in a circle, but could move around within the circle) to a gas (moving around the room, but bouncing off one another and the walls/furniture), then back into a liquid, then into a solid (ice, but in a crystal structure with girls only able to touch each other's backs with one hand).

From South Africa's RAND Water

Wetland in a Bottle. We did this activity on a troop camping trip. We brought a couple of empty 2-liter plastic soda bottles precut, then asked the girls to gather up the soil, grass, leaves, small rocks, etc. from around the campsite to make their own wetland. Best to use some dirty water with grass, etc. floating in it, so the scouts get the idea of how the wetlands clean the water. We made sure to show them the "cleaner" water coming out of the spout and ask them if it looked like what they saw on a hike down to a local river (about the same color). www.randwater.co.za/CorporateResponsibility/WWE/Pages/WetlandModel.aspx File:Building a model of a Wetland.docx Wetland in a bottle trio. My troop discussed why it is important to save water and how some people don't have it piped to their homes. They have to fetch and carry it themselves -- and that this is often done by girls their age, who then don't have time to go to school. When they said "Yeah!" to not going to school, I mentioned that, then, they wouldn't learn to read and therefore couldn't read Harry Potter ("Oh NO!").

Water Relay. After a quick discussion of importance, the girls did a Water Relay with jugs of water to see how hard this was. They did it once holding a jug of water on their head down a long hallway, and once holding a jug in each hand. It gave them the idea of how tiring it could be. (We did this in February, so we had to do it inside; if it had been warmer, I might have tried it outside with buckets instead.

Ideas for how the girls could save water:

Water Conservation Charades. I found 20 ways that 7-9 year olds could save water themselves File:Water charades.pdf‎ (instead of some of the suggestions on the web to "replace your toilet" which they can't really do themselves!). I put these on small pieces of paper and had pairs of girls draw slips. They acted out their conservation example for the other girls to guess at. It made the learning a lot more fun.

Saving Water game. Found this game at http://www.get2knowh2o.org/student/Exp2.pdf. The girls split into two teams (conservers and non-conservers) with separate buckets and instructions on when and how much water to "use" for different tasks. At the end they compare how much water they have left.

Can You Undo Water Pollution? Experiment. Put some household trash, including vegetable oil, coffee grounds, and solid wastes, in a tub of water. Have the girls use tongs and a sieve to see how hard it is to clean the water.

Measuring success:

Water Meter Tracking. I gave the girls a homework sheet to take home to remind them to tell their families about how to save water, and on the back, I printed up all 20 ways to save water that the girls discussed during the meeting. Also on the sheet was a table for them to write down their meter readings at their home, and asked them to do one reading soon after the meeting, and do at least one other reading before the next meeting. I put more rows on the table, in case any girls wanted to track it more often than this, with room for them to do the subtraction of one reading from the other to see how much water their family used. (FYI, i did check with all of the parents ahead of time to make sure they each had access to the water meter in their house. If you have families in apartments, this might not be possible).

World Water Monitoring Challenge for National Public Lands Day

Be a Citizen Scientist: Monitor Water at a Public Land Near You! For many years, Thanksgiving was a day full of food, family and most importantly, a long weekend off of school for me. Don’t get me wrong, I was raised to have a thankful heart for everything I’ve ever been given. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the importance of daily thankfulness. When I purpose to take a moment each day and inventory all the good I been blessed with in my life, it always changes my attitude and improves my mood. A heart overflowing with thankfulness is a joyful heart.

I challenge you today, on the 4th day of November, to join with me in this Thankfulness Challenge that I began on my Hello Gorgeous Facebook page. You can do it privately, by just taking a few moments every day to mentally assess one thing or person you’re grateful to have in your life. Or you can join me on Facebook and comment along with my post each day. You can also share my daily posts to your own personal Facebook page to share with your family and friends. However you’d like to join in!

In the current climate of negativity that is so overwhelming on social media, I wanted to create a space each day where I can post something positive. I’m hoping to encourage my Gorgeous Fam to do the same. I can’t control what others post or comment, but I can be different. I can be positive and I can be thankful. And you can too. I hope you choose to join me on this journey of thankfulness. Let’s kick it off by commenting below with what you are thankful for today.

Just a couple things about this look… Which, I gotta say, is the perfect Fall outfit. I meannnn, am I not right?!

You probably recognize these killer over-the-knee boots from this Instagram post. I had so many of you ask if they were actually comfortable to wear. The answer is a big, fat Y.E.S! The heel is 3.5″ but the chunkiness of the heel is what makes them so easy to walk or stand in. The quality is great too. If you struggle with OTK boots being too large in the knee/thigh area, these are great because they tie in the back, allowing for a better fit. The price tag is amazing at under $130. I also own this pair, with a zip closure, that are under $100. Both pairs are awesome dupes for the oh-so-coveted Stuart Weitzman’s that return every year.

This sweater color is everything for Fall. I saw a segment on the Today Show this morning talking about this gorgeous rust color. They referred to this shade as “Pumpkin Spice” and that just made me happy. It’s so fitting for this time of year. This beautiful turtleneck sweater also comes in “Forrest Green.”

The last thing I want to touch on is my nail polish. I saw a pin on Pinterest a few weeks ago branding this shade as the perfect Fall nail color. I immediately had to get my hands on a bottle. And girl, let me just tell you, this polish did not disappoint me. I’m basically obsessed. This polish is Essie’s “Angora Cardi“ and I’m not going to lie… I’ll probably wear it several more times before Spring arrives.

Photos by Kara Colleen Photography.

What I’m Wearing:

Sweater: Nordstrom (Wearing size: XS; UNDER $80!) // Jeans: Nordstrom (Wearing size: 26) // OTK Boots: Steve Madden, Similar Under $100 // Handbag : Vintage Louis Vuitton (ON SALE 20% OFF!) // Earrings: Kate Spade // Nail Color: Essie “Angora Cardi”

Original article and pictures take http://angelalanter.com/2016/11/november-challenge-30-days-thankfulness/?preview_id=7170&preview_nonce=a264c47406&post_format=standard&_thumbnail_id=-1&preview=true site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-70640508034332049152016-11-07T19:41:00.000-08:002016-11-21T11:28:57.715-08:00Winter Beauty Essentials
Winter Beauty Essentials

<a href=http://www.temporary-secretary.com/2016/11/winter-beauty-essentials-pink-edition.html">

Sponsored by Single Edition Media

On first impression, it might not seem like a very winter-y post, but pink is a colour that's suitable for all seasons, right? Although my wardrobe is lacking in colour, it doesn't mean my beauty cabinet should be.

Today I have gathered some of the beauty products I’ve got mad love for lately, in the theme of PINK, Starting with the one that inspired this blogpost, Katy Perry's Mad Love Eau de Parfum*.

If I ever get the chance to meet Katy Perry, I’d imagine that Mad Love, her new perfume, is exactly how she would smell.

On paper, the packaging design of the perfume sounds like it could’ve been dreamt up by a blogger. The outer cardboard carton packaging is a mix of pastel pink with white marble effect. The bottle design itself it a pink potion bottle with a white marble effect lid. Oh, you had me at ‘marble’, Katy.

Winter Beauty Essentials

It isn't your typical Winter fragrance, but it is definitely a scent that will cheer you up this season, especially if you're more of a summer girl like I am! I'm sat here wishing for sunny weather.

The perfume itself could be described with words such as ‘candy’ and ‘cute’, but that’s the whole brand of Katy Perry and she’s captured it well as a fragrance - ideal for fans of Katy but it's such an inoffensive scent that I think most people would take to it quite well! I actually love the sweet, fruit, girly fragrance which has notes of peonies, grapefruit, apple sorbet and strawberry.

The most prominent scent is the strawberry, that’s what you smell as soon as the perfume is freshly sprayed. The dry down scent is a creamy coconut and sandalwood which cuts the sweetness down.

katy perry mad love perfume

I have a few of these lying around (read: never ending supply) as they seem to be included in almost every one of their gift sets. Not that I'm complaining because it is one of the best hand creams ever. Hand Food is Soap & Glory's award winning hand cream made from shea butter, macadamia oil, and marshmallow - all combined to make a hydrating moisturiser to pamper your hands with.

This is a little miracle worker! I use 3 pumps of this fruity scented serum on towel-dried hair before blow drying to add shine, tame and de-frizz me ol' barnet. I recently dyed my hair again so I'm using serums and quick treatments to keep it looking healthy, especially when I know I'm spending the majority of the day outdoors.

Bareminerals BarePro*

This doesn't fit in to the pink theme, I know, but I just had to give BareMinerals BarePro a mention (I also don't have a foundation that is packaged in pink!).

I have seen mixed reviews but I've personally got on well with it. I think it is marketed as a foundation you can wear on it's own and I think theat the coverage may be too light for some. It *might* make a difference if you use BareMinerals Core Coverage Brush to build the coverage, as it packs the powder on but I keep it simple by sweeping BarePro foundation over a BB Cream to cover, mattify, and set.

To let my skin breathe for a day, I use it on it's own when I can't be bothered to add a proper base. The selling point for me is that it's non-comedogenic (doesn't block pores).

winter beauty essentials

I am very picky when it comes to lipgloss. I dislike that gloopy texture but these days, the formula has improved a lot. A lot of brands have released non-sticky formulas but they're still sticky?! But the consistency is lighter and less-gloopy for which I am happy about! I've been a chapped mess lately, so I've been reaching for the lip gloss rather than the lippy and Lily Lolo's English Rose has been my lip colour of choice.

This is probably my all-time favourite body scrub, it's smells like a bowl of oats and syrup... which might sound strange if you've never smelled Soap & Glory's Smoothie Star Breakfast Scrub before, but trust me!! If you like sweetly scented body products, you will LOVE this. There's a body lotion with a matching scent if you want to smell like cupcakes all day long!

katy perry mad love perfume

I have one bottle of Katy Perry's Mad Love Eau de Parfum up for grabs and all you have to do is enter via Rafflecopter below. They can dress up homes, sheds and commercial buildings such as retail shops, restaurants and hotels.

Although they are widely popular throughout Europe, there are towns in the US that are known for their window boxes. Charleston, South Carolina is one of those and it’s on my bucket list to visit. I could walk up and down every street and photograph every one of them.

You don’t have to live in Europe or Charleston to add these charming accessories to your home. Here’s a sampling of window boxes that add mass curb appeal.

Neutral Window Boxes

Although I am a big fan of color, I do love the simplicity of white flowers in these black window boxes on this brownstone. So elegant.

For shaded areas, ferns add a nice touch.

Window Boxes with Color

I like how these plants add height as well as a waterfall effect. Charts such as this give concrete examples of how writers can elaborate on ideas and knowledge by explicitly annotating the questions and providing examples from a published text. Keeping the five W’s, plus the How, in mind makes it much easier to elaborate because it gives kids possibly six ways to elaborate each and every time.

A closeup of the Questions chart that shows examples for the questions How? and Where?

Another goal for this unit was to teach children how to write well about their science topics. Writing was not just to record the results of experiments, but to turn this newly found knowledge into writing that would encapsulate all that was learned and could teach lots of folks about the topic. Once again, turning to mentor authors helps insure there is a clear vision of what is possible and how one might go about getting there. Yes, a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

This chart annotates examples from published texts that can act as models for student writers.

The purpose of this chart is to provide clear examples, while also setting clear expectations of what science writers should include when writing texts designed to teach. The next step will be to have kids use this chart as a way of comparing their own writing to the writing on the chart. They can write their names on post-its and put them next to the types of craft moves they have tried. Teachers can also photocopy student examples and hang these next to the published authors, which furthers children’s sense of competency and accomplishment.

Close-up of Write like a Scientist chart

Close-up of Writing like a Scientist chart

This is an example of a chart that was created with students based on what they had noticed as they studied mentor texts. It also specifically highlights craft moves that have been taught and makes clear expectations for what writers should include in their own writing. It also provides multiple entry points for crafting writing. In other words, there is something for everyone. When asked to place their name next to strategies tried, everyone will be able to feel successful.

These types of charts can be used for any genre, any subject. If you are planning to end the school year with a unit on poetry, for example, you can imagine some poems you might annotate with the kids. You might highlight topic, title, line breaks, repetition, word choice, punctuation, last lines, and so on. This type of chart has endless possibilities, as do teachers!

Happy charting!

Marjorie Martinelli and Kristine Mraz

Original article and pictures take http://chartchums.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/winding-it-down-while-ratcheting-it-up/ site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-27541512785641617522016-11-05T21:51:00.000-07:002016-11-21T11:28:48.844-08:00Wildest Dreams Garden Design
Wildest Dreams Garden Design

<a href=http://wildestdreamsgardens.tumblr.com/">

Today, the first of the Moon of Slush

aka. October, and no slush yet in sight, I’m happy to say. But first frost is arriving next week, it seems. Yikes. Let’s hope that it is not a deep one, for quite a few plants are still in the growth mode and not realising its time for the long sleep.

On the other hand, I’ve been just trying to get up to speed with the school that started in early September. The subject is interesting with GIS / Geographic Information Systems in focus this time, and how they can be put to use in design and in management. Recent pop song refrains come to mind: Work work work work work.. ;) hehehe

The last few clematis flowers are lingering, only the asters are at their best. I love them for their hard work at the end of the season when everything else is looking ratty and tired. This past month saw the turning of the leaves, for myself too: our Clematis paper was finally published! I’m so happy about that! You can take a look at the abstract here:

I want to thank you all for being there with me on this journey. All the rebloggers, you are doing such a fantastic job. It’s the foundation of many, many meals! Plan ahead and you can have your own year round supply of organic garlic with little effort.

Lots of people ask me about my favorite vegetable to grow in my garden. Although it’s difficult to narrow it down to just one, garlic is definitely up there! I plant between 220 bulbs every fall and harvest them in July.

My garlic stores in my basement for the whole year, so I never buy garlic from the grocery store and haven’t for many years.

If you live in a colder climate like mine in Wisconsin (zone 5a/b), you should plant your garlic during the last two weeks of October. I wait until I get a hard frost in my garden so I can clean out some garden beds to make room for garlic planting.

(If you live in a warmer climate, read this and this for tips about growing garlic in your region.)

To get you excited about growing garlic I’m sharing the reasons why I love it so much…and think you should, too!

Garlic growing in my spring garden.

6 REASONS YOU SHOULD PLANT GARLIC

It’s super low maintenance. Once you plant and mulch your garlic there’s very little to do until the harvest the following summer. Just keep it weeded (which is easy to do if you mulch it heavily) and watered if it gets dry.

It survives the winter. Where I live in WI we can get lows down to -40 degrees F in winter. (I know, I ask myself why I live here every January and February!) There aren’t a whole lot of vegetables that can take that brutal weather. But, garlic survives and thrives.

No pests and diseases. In my garden, garlic has always been pest and disease free. There are a few that exist, but they’re not very common in the home garden.

It doesn’t take up much space. You can plant garlic 6” apart on all sides. That means you can fit a lot of garlic in a garden bed. My 220 cloves take up about two garden beds. Not a bad payback for so little space!

It stores for a long time. If you grow the right types you can store your garlic fresh in your basement or other cool area for up to a year. It’s so fun to use your own garlic in the kitchen all winter long! (See how I harvest and store my garlic here.)

It’s fun! Anything that’s easy to grow and requires little work from me is a fun vegetable to grow in my book. Garlic pokes up through the mulch soon after the ground thaws and adds a little greenery to the early season garden.

Some types produce a crazy looking scape in late spring from which you can make pesto, and hauling in a load of garlic in the mid-summer kicks of the harvest season with a bang.

.

Have I convinced you yet? If so, I walk you through the entire process of planting, growing, harvesting and curing your garlic (with full color photos!) in my eBook, The Essential Guide to Growing Garlic. It’s on sale for only $5 since we’re heading into garlic season! Read about it here.

","discussion":{"numPages":1,"provider":"Blogspot","confidence":0.15,"diffbotUri":"discussion|3|884644132","pageUrl":"http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/plant-garlic/","numPosts":34,"type":"discussion","title":"Why You Should Plant Garlic this Fall","posts":[{"date":"Tue, 06 Sep 2016 16:51:00 GMT","humanLanguage":"en","author":"Lisa","diffbotUri":"post|3|-1387468278","html":"
Just a question, I planted garlic this year in a pot, it is doing well, but isn’t ready, I didn’t realize it took so long so I am wondering, do I leave the pot outside during the winter? Dolce & Gabbana even flanked its runway with palms, creating a veritable rainforest from which its models emerged in dark florals and brazen prints. It could have felt passé. Instead, it felt evolved.

So why such continued fascination? Why hasn’t the tropicana trend wilted from exhaustion like others over the past few years (looking at you, hipster triangles and Kinfolk-vibe deer head-prints)?

It’s an enticing question, and we’ve got at least one theory.

The trend was born in the '30s, in many ways another product of colonialism and its insatiable thirst for “exotica.” The Western world and its various empires sought creative inspiration from the jungle, with success. But it was always through the rose-colored (and very problematic) glasses of Rudyard Kipling and the like. Tropicana was and is, at its core, a fetishized aesthetic; a nostalgic romanticism for a place we’ve never been.

Enter the late '00s: palm prints, though never fully absent, relives an infectious rise in popularity through the Y and Z generations and the rise of Southern California Gothic crooners ('sup, Lana Del Rey) makes it all very Urban Outfitters-appropriate. Few of us in attendance, if any, realized the solar roofing tiles were actual functional solar panels until Elon Musk said so. Sure, it’s a neat trick, but what’s the big deal?

Why does it matter that Tesla is making a fashion statement when the point is green power and a future where we aren’t so dependent on fossil fuels?

I’ve heard from some people suggesting that this is nothing new, because of other similar previous projects, including Dow Chemical’s canned solar shingle project, for example. Others are wary of Tesla’s ability to sway consumers with a solar solution that sounds like it’ll still be quite expensive in terms of up-front (or, with payment plans, deferred but net) installation costs. Still others aren’t clear on Tesla’s goals with this product, or how it fits into the company’s overall strategy relative to its electric vehicles.

Looks matter

It’s easy to dismiss the aesthetic import of how Tesla’s tiles look, but it’s actually important, and a real consideration for homeowners looking to build new homes or revamp their existing ones. The appearance of the tiles, which come in four distinct flavors (Textured Glass, Slate Glass, Tuscan Glass and Smooth Glass) is going to be a core consideration for prospective buyers, especially those at the top end of the addressable market with the disposable income available to do everything they can to ensure their home looks as good as it possibly can.

As with other kinds of technologies that are looking to make the leap from outlier oddity to mainstream mainstay, solar has a hurdle to leap in terms of customer perception. Existing solar designs, and even so-called attempts to make them more consistent with traditional offerings like the above-mentioned Dow Chemical project, leave a lot to be desired in terms of creating something that can be broadly described as good-looking.

It’s like the VR headset — Oculus and Google can make claims about their use of fabric making their headsets more approachable, but both are still just options somewhere along the curve of things with niche appeal. Neither is very likely to strike a truly broad audience of users as acceptable, and neither are solar panels that don’t succeed in completely disguising themselves as such.

Halo effects

Tesla has been referred to as the Apple of the automotive world by more than a few analysts and members of the media, and if there’s one thing Apple does well, it’s capitalize on the so-called “halo effect.” This is the phenomenon whereby customers of one of its lines of business are likely to become customers of some of the others; iPhone buyers tend to often go on to own a Mac, for instance.

For Tesla, this represents an opportunity to jump-start its home solar business (which it’ll take on in earnest provided its planned acquisition of SolarCity goes through) through the knock-on effects of its brisk Tesla EV sales, including the tremendous pre-order interest for the Model 3. It’s strange to think of halo effects with big-ticket items, including vehicles and home energy systems, but Tesla’s fan base shares a lot of characteristics with Apple’s, and because they’re already purchasing at the level of an entire automobile, the frame of reference for what constitutes a valid halo purchase is actually appropriate.

Tesla, like Apple, scores well with customer satisfaction and brand commitment, and that’s something that no one trying to sell a solar home energy system at scale can match. As strange as it sounds, “buying a roof because you like your car” might be the new “buying a computer because you like your phone.”

Benefits beyond basic solar

Tesla’s solar tiles claim to be able to power a standard home, and provide spare power via the new Powerwall 2 battery in case of inclement weather or other outages. Musk says that the overall cost will still be less than installing a regular old roof and paying the electric company for power from conventional sources. But Musk’s claims about the new benefits of the new solutions don’t end there.

Tesla’s tiles will actually be more resilient than traditional roofing materials, including terra-cotta, clay and slate tiles. That’s because of the toughness of the glass used in their construction, according to Musk, who demonstrated the results of heavy impact from above, using a kettlebell as you can see in the video below.

This should make them theoretically more resistant to potential damage from elements like hail, or even debris like fallen tree branches. In fact, Musk also said at the event that the roofs should far outlast the standard 20-year life cycle common for roofing materials used today — by as much as two or even three times. Fewer roof tile replacements means more value, provided that’s not already factored into his estimates of the up-front cost.

There’s also the possibility that the new tiles could become more efficient than existing solar panel options. Though in their current form, Musk says they achieve 98 percent of the efficiency of regular panels. He said that the company is working with 3M on coatings that could help light enter the panel and then refract within, letting it capture even more of the potential energy it carries to translate that into consumable power.

A new kind of ecosystem

The announcement of Tesla’s solar tiles does not guarantee a sweeping solar power revolution; far from it, since Tesla says it won’t start installing the product in any consumer homes until next year, and a lot can happen between now and then. But Musk also said with full confidence that he ultimately expects the Powerwall to outsell Tesla cars, and easily so.

Solar roofing, Powerwall and Tesla cars taken together represent a new kind of ecosystem in consumer tech, one that carries a promise of self-sufficiency in addition to ecological benefits. Tesla has already tipped its hand with respect to how it intends to make vehicle ownership a revenue generator for its drivers, rather than a cost center. You can see how it might eventually do the same for solar power using solar tile roofs combined with Powerwalls installed in series, giving homeowners surplus power generation and storage with a few different potential options for monetizing the excess (including, say, acting as a supercharger station for other Teslas, or selling back to the grid).

It’s tempting to look at Tesla’s unveiling last week and think that it’s more of an incremental development in the home solar industry. But it’s more likely a step toward a future where individuals have more direct control over power generation, leading to a big difference in how we think about renewable energy.

Original article and pictures take https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/31/why-teslas-new-solar-roof-tiles-and-home-battery-are-such-a-big-deal/ site

all newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07139638491154685428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266298239868621431.post-80580309473151061872016-10-31T17:22:00.000-07:002016-11-21T11:28:48.804-08:00Why Oil Prices Fluctuate #Infographic
Why Oil Prices Fluctuate #Infographic

<a href=http://www.visualistan.com/2016/08/why-oil-prices-fluctuate-infographic.html">

Most of us greet the news that oil has fallen to $50 a barrel with a shrug of our shoulders. It resembles how sunlight passes through the atmosphere and turns a clear sky into a blue sky.

The science behind the blue sky is quite awesome. After the demonstration, I will provide a simple explanation of this natural phenomenon for younger kids and then a more detailed one for those who are looking for advanced explanations.

Don’t forget to check out the video below, too!

What you need for the blue sky experiment

a clear glass

water

soap (preferably white, I used Kirk’s Castile soap. A little bit of milk or milk powder should also work)

a flashlight that emits white light (I used TaoTronics LED light bulb)

adult supervision

Mini LED Flashlight Torch

Steps

Fill the glass with water.

Dissolve a little bit of soap in the water to get a cloudy solution.
If you use a bar soap like I do, submerge it into the water and rub the surface a little bit to get a white solution, which will be the blue sky for your experiment.
If you use milk powder, dissolve one teaspoon at a time until you have a white cloudy solution.

In a dark room, point the flashlight at the cloudy solution from the side.

Observe the solution to see a hint of the color sky blue.

Simple explanation for the color of the sky

White light from the flashlight is a mixture of all colors of the rainbow. Similar to the flashlight, the light from the sun also comprises rainbow colors.

(Do you remember seeing rainbows after raining? Rainbows appear when sunlight is refracted by the water droplets in the air. You can make rainbows at home, too. Here is how to separate sunlight or white light from torches into the rainbow colors at your own home.)

In this experiment, when the white flashlight passes through the fluid holding small soap particles, blue is scattered by the particles more than most other colors. As a result, we see a hint of the sky blue color in the solution.

The soap particles suspending in water represents dust particles suspending in the air. In the air, blue is also scattered more than most other colors in the sunlight. Therefore, when we look at the sky on a clear sunny day, the color of the sky is blue.

Click To Tweet

Advanced Explanation

Sunlight coming through the atmosphere is scattered by molecules in the air, including air molecules and various dust particles. These particles are very small, so small that we can’t normally see them with our bare eyes even though the air is full of them, trillions and billions. This scattering effect is called Rayleigh scattering.

The spectrum of light that makes up the sunlight contains color lights of different wavelengths. Scattering is more effective with the shorter wavelengths than with the longer ones. Blue and violet are the shorter wavelength visible lights and so they are scattered more.

Although violet is supposed to be scattered more than blue because its wavelength is shorter, our eyes are less sensitive to violet than to blue. This is why the sky is blue during the day.

Now, it’s your turn. Try the experiment and tell us how it goes in the comment below.

Explore

Have you ever wondered why the sky turns red or orange at sunset? Truly a man repeller.”

My initial reaction was to laugh — chiefly because it seemed incredibly unusual if not highly offensive that he would describe a fellow woman to his female assistant as “ugly as fuck.”

But then I got emotional. Ugly as fuck? Really? And that was the chaser for a descriptive clause that pegged me not just smart but funny, which had to mean looking at my face for the course of our 30 minute conversation was as painful as say, getting a colonoscopy without the preliminary anesthesia.

A few months prior to this I noticed that the details of my makeup regimen (or lack thereof) had become something of a hot topic on the Man Repeller Instagram feed. I chalked up the cause of conversation to either people taking notice of the fact that I don’t wear very much makeup or to my taking notice of their having taken notice.

The comments sometimes appear as compound questions like, “you could be cute but why don’t you wear makeup?” Other times they’re just plain insulting. As recently as last week, I’ve been called an ugly whore (not so far off from “as fuck”) which seems really inconsistent with the Man Repeller ethos seeing as we don’t typically sell bodies — we sell ideas.

That and clothes.

But have I started to notice the criticism because of that website founder? And what has that awareness elicited intrinsically?

It occurred to me last month when I was laying in bed beside my mother in a hotel room in Milan, trolling my own comment feed and half lamenting, half giggling about the abundance of distraught comments over the state of my face that maybe I should wear makeup. Something so simple that my mother said, so benign and innocent, so obvious, released a trigger in me.

“Makeup is meant to enhance the natural beauty of a woman, Leandra, so, really, why wouldn’t you use it?”

I contemplated her question for a moment but frankly, the answer is simple.

I’m not making a statement. I’m not trying to act like the most extreme, hyper-literal and violent version of a man repeller. If you read this site you know by now that Man Repelling is an attitude. It is a state of existence. It is not whether you do your hair or curl your lashes, or even what you wear. It is how you approach doing those things. Why you do those things, and perhaps most importantly, it is a love letter to individuality, which is something that manifests itself in plentifully different ways.

So the reason I don’t wear makeup is because I am lazy. And don’t get me wrong — I am as much a sucker for the newest “anti-aging miracle cream” as the next guy. Just because I don’t wear much makeup doesn’t mean I don’t believe in good skin. I want to know that if I don’t wash my face, I won’t tarnish my pillow. I don’t want to see the ingredients that constructed my previous night’s visage wiped off into a towel. I also read somewhere that if you sleep with mascara on your lashes they are 70% more likely to fall out so as far as I’m concerned, maintaining real lashes that aren’t quite as plump as they can be is ten times more compelling than having none at all.

More important than that though, I am comfortable with how I look. I don’t hate what I see when I look in the mirror. Even if legions of others don’t agree. I have accepted the reflection that reliably bounces back at me for its perks and its flaws. I understand that there are thick, dark circles under my eyes. I have grown to appreciate them. I have noticed that my nose grows a little hookier on a near-monthly basis. That’s fine. I know there are wrinkles ready to stake their claim as full time residents on my forehead any moment now. My dad has those, too, and I find that endearing.

My eyes will never be blue, my bone structure will never allow for you to mistake me for a Scandinavian model. I am who I am and even if that infers “ugly as fuck,” I think it’s, I don’t know, beautiful.

*

Click here to watch our Adventures in Beauty Vlogging. People are handed prescriptions instead of actually fixing their problems. I can’t tell you how many prescription drugs I’ve been prescribed, everything from Accutane to Xanax. I wish I had known that essential oils were not only more effective, but safer. 100 people die everyday in the US from prescription drug overdose, but what if these people were instead introduced to a healthy diet and essential oils? Can you imagine how many lives would not only be saved, but would be drastically improved?

We need to start fostering the power of plants instead of toxic, dangerous prescription drugs. In the New York Times, neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta said,

According to a 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine, as many as 98,000 Americans were dying every year because of medical mistakes. Today, exact figures are hard to come by because states don’t abide by the same reporting guidelines…But a reasonable estimate is that medical mistakes now kill around 200,000 Americans every year. That would make them one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Why have these mistakes been so hard to prevent?

Dr. Gupta includes prescription drugs in these medical mistakes and goes on to discuss the case of a patient with a respiratory infection that came close to death,

At my first M and M as a medical student, I heard the story of a patient who had received antibiotics for an upper respiratory tract infection. Two weeks later she developed joint pain and blisters on her chest and arms, a condition known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which can be caused by an allergic reaction to antibiotics. She ended up with sepsis, a bodywide infection, and spent two weeks in intensive care.

While we could write this off and assume that the chances of these medical maladies are one in a million, or that they are uncommon mistakes, or that they could never happen to us or anyone we know and love, let me remind you that the estimated figure for medical mistakes is upward of 200,000 which would make medical mistakes one of the leading causes of death.

Hell, even the flu shot has killed people.

My question is this: what if these people, people like me and you who don’t have life threatening

health issues, were instead taking safer, more effective alternative therapies? What if they were even combined with traditional therapies? I’m not saying to abandon your doctor and his/her advice, I’m simply suggesting that we take some responsibility for our own health. That we explore safer and healthier options before running out for a prescription.

What would happen if our first resort was diet and potent, plant based natural remedies?

What if instead of Xanax, people first tried Balance, which is a blend of oils that is designed to promote relaxation. What if instead of painkillers for a sore back, people tried Deep Blue, a mix of oils designed to relax muscles. What if instead of of sleeping pills people tried Serenity, a blend of oils that promote sleep and relaxation when applied to the bottom of feet at bedtime?

How much easier, healthier, and happier would lives be?

Here is a partial list of ailments and the corresponding essential oils (you can learn more about essential oils and where to order them HERE).

Anxious Feelings

Balance, Lavender, Serenity, Citrus Bliss, PastTense, Eucalyptus

Sadness

Balance, Lavender, Serenity, Citrus Bliss, Elevation

Restlessness

Serenity

Respiratory Issues

Breather

Blemishes

Clear Skin Topical Blend, Melalecua (Tea Tree)

Sore Muscles & Joints

AromaTouch, Deep Blue, Basil Oil

Digestive Upset, Heartburn

DigestZen, Coriander Oil, Fennel Oil

Anti-Aging

Immortelle

Immune Support

On Guard

Head & Neck Tension/Pain

PastTense, Deep Blue

Bug Spray

TerraShield

PMS, Menopause, Hormones

ClaryCalm

Detox

Zendocrine

Inability to Focus

InTune

Cold Sores

Lemon Oil

Weight Loss

Slim & Sassy

What if we used these oils instead of toxic medications?
